Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Nightmares (CBT-N) is a an effective, short-term therapy to reduce the frequency and intensity of nightmares. It is a structured approach using a range of techniques to change the nightmare cycle.

CBT-N begins with education on sleep and nightmares, including information on what causes nightmares, habits that may be maintaining them, and support around making changes to your sleep routines. Therapy for nightmares then involves identifying and resolving themes in your nightmares by rescripting the nightmares and practicing imagery rehearsal.

If needed, you can work through other sleep-related issues alongside CBT-N, such as developing healthy sleep habits, reducing sleep anxiety, and insomnia.

CBT-N can help if you have been having well-remembered nightmares for more than a month, at least once a week, that usually wake you up and cause distress. They may or may not be related to trauma/Trauma, and may cause physical reactions or emotions. Note that CBT-N is not effective for night terrors (waking feeling panicked, with no dream content), anxiety dreams (bad dreams that don't wake you up), or nocturnal panic attacks, although if nightmares improve, these conditions may also improve.

Visit the About Me page for information about my background and approach to CBT-N.
